A Hillside Property Transformed from the Ground Up
This Millcreek property presented every challenge a hillside site can offer: steep grade changes, aging timber steps, an outdated rock wall, and a backyard that had never been fully developed. The homeowners wanted a complete reinvention — one that would manage the slope, add usable outdoor living space, and give the front yard a clean, welcoming presence.
Black Diamond Landscape designed and built a solution that works at every level of the site. Terraced Belgard Steeple Crest retaining walls reshape the front landscape and manage grade transitions. A new concrete driveway replaces the original surface. Multi-level TimberTech composite decks create outdoor living rooms on the hillside. A custom fire feature and paver patio anchor the backyard gathering space. BioGrass sod establishes the lawn on both levels.

Existing Conditions
The front yard featured aging planting areas, an original grade that made the approach feel disconnected, and a driveway that had reached the end of its useful life. The hillside side yard was constrained and inaccessible. The backyard was undeveloped, with a natural-rock slope, timber steps, and a mature pine that defined the character of the site but offered no usable outdoor space.

Terraced Walls That Reshape the Landscape
The Belgard Steeple Crest retaining-wall system is the structural backbone of the renovation. Terraced walls organize the front yard across multiple elevations, creating defined planting beds and a clear approach to the home. Along the driveway edge, a finished wall supports the landscaped slope and gives the arrival area a polished, intentional character.
At the back of the property, the wall system works in coordination with the TimberTech deck structure to resolve the hillside grade change — each element reinforcing the other to create a stable, usable outdoor environment.
Concrete driveway & circulation
A New Driveway and Accessible Circulation Throughout
The original driveway was replaced with a new concrete surface that complements the retaining walls and gives the front approach a clean, finished look. Concrete walkways, hillside steps, and stepping pads connect the different levels of the property — making every part of the site accessible and easy to navigate.
TimberTech composite decks
Multi-Level Decks That Expand Outdoor Living on the Hillside
The multi-level TimberTech composite deck system is the centerpiece of the backyard transformation. An upper deck creates a comfortable outdoor living area adjacent to the home. A lower viewing deck extends further down the hillside, offering a distinct outdoor room with a wooded backdrop. Black metal railings tie the system together and give the decks a modern, intentional character.
The deck structure works in direct coordination with the Belgard retaining walls — each level of the deck is supported by and integrated with the wall system below, creating a unified hillside solution rather than a collection of separate elements.
Fire feature & paver patio
A Custom Fire Feature and Gathering Space in the Backyard
A custom rectangular fire feature and paver patio create the primary gathering space in the backyard. A low seat wall defines the perimeter of the patio and gives the space a sense of enclosure without blocking the wooded hillside view. The fire feature serves as a natural focal point — drawing people together and extending the usability of the outdoor space into the evening.
BioGrass sod & plantings
Established Lawn and Naturalistic Plantings
BioGrass sod establishes the lawn on both the front yard and the backyard, giving the property a lush, finished appearance. On the hillside, naturalistic plantings and natural boulders integrate the landscape with its wooded Millcreek setting — softening the retaining walls and creating a sense of place that feels native to the site.
