Open-roof pergolas for shade and definition

Pergolas define outdoor space without enclosing it. Open rafters filter sunlight, support string lights or climbing plants, and create a visual anchor for a seating or dining area. Black Diamond builds freestanding and attached pergolas in wood and steel, engineered for Utah snow loads and UV exposure.

Attached pergolas connect directly to the house wall and extend the roofline into the yard. Freestanding pergolas stand independently and can be positioned anywhere on the property.

A pavilion is a covered outdoor room. A solid roof — shingled, metal, or standing seam — keeps rain and snow off the space and makes it usable through Utah's shoulder seasons. Black Diamond builds timber-frame and steel pavilions with integrated electrical, ceiling fans, and lighting.

Pavilions are typically larger than pergolas and are designed as primary outdoor living destinations — dining, lounging, or entertaining — rather than accent structures.

Modern Shade Structures

Slatted shade structures use horizontal slats to filter light and provide partial privacy without a solid roof. The same slat language can extend vertically as a privacy screen — defining the edge of a deck or patio without fully enclosing it.

These structures suit decks and raised patios where a full roof would feel too heavy, and where filtered shade and visual separation are the primary goals.
